One Audition Changed Everything
For as long as he could remember, fourteen-year-old Marcus loved performing.
Whether he was reciting lines from his favorite movies, singing along to musicals he watched online, or creating his own characters, Marcus came alive whenever he stepped into a story.
His mother, Denise, noticed it early.
"He could make you laugh, cry, and tell an entire story right in our living room," she recalls. "He wasn't just acting—he was becoming the character."
Growing up in an inner-city neighborhood, Marcus often felt like his dreams were bigger than his surroundings.
The local high school had a theater program, and one afternoon Marcus came home excited after learning about a summer performing arts academy in Atlanta that offered acting, public speaking, and stage performance training.
For weeks, he talked about little else.
"He kept telling me, 'Mom, this is what I want to do. I know this is where I belong,'" Denise says.
But there was a problem.
The program's tuition, transportation costs, and required supplies were more than Denise could afford.
As a single mother working long hours to provide for her family, she was already juggling rent, groceries, utilities, and transportation.
"I hated having to tell him that I didn't know how we were going to make it happen," Denise recalls. "As parents, we want to help our children pursue their passions, but sometimes the finances just aren't there."
Still, Marcus refused to give up.
And neither did Denise.
While researching scholarship opportunities, she discovered The Giving Society.
After sharing Marcus's story and his passion for the performing arts, The Giving Society was able to provide scholarship assistance through the Brilliance Scholars Fund, making it possible for Marcus to attend the summer academy.
The experience changed everything.
For the first time, Marcus was surrounded by mentors, instructors, and peers who shared his passion for theater.
He learned acting techniques, performed in front of audiences, and discovered a confidence he never knew he had.
The shy teenager who once questioned whether his dreams were realistic began to see a future filled with possibility.
By the end of the program, Marcus had earned a lead role in the academy's final performance.
As Denise watched her son walk across the stage to thunderous applause, tears filled her eyes.
"I wasn't just watching him perform," she says. "I was watching him believe in himself."
Today, Marcus continues to participate in theater productions at school and in the community. He dreams of studying performing arts in college and one day working on stage and screen.
For Denise, the impact goes far beyond theater.
"The Giving Society didn't just help my son attend a program," she says. "They helped him find his voice. They showed him that his dreams matter and that they are worth pursuing."
At The Giving Society, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to explore their talents, discover their passions, and pursue their dreams—regardless of their zip code or financial circumstances.
Because sometimes all it takes is one opportunity.
One scholarship.
One person willing to believe.
And a child can begin to see a future they never thought possible.
