The Help Maria Had Been Praying For
When Maria tucked her son Joshua into bed each night, she carried a worry that kept her awake long after he had fallen asleep.
Joshua was struggling in school. His grades were slipping, reading assignments had become a source of frustration, and math seemed to get harder with every passing week. As his confidence declined, so did his belief in himself.
Maria knew Joshua was capable of more. She saw his intelligence, his curiosity, and his determination. But as a divorced mother working two jobs just to keep the lights on and provide for her family, she faced an impossible reality.
"I wanted to help him," Maria recalls. "I knew he needed tutoring, but I honestly didn't know how I could afford it. Every dollar was already going toward rent, utilities, groceries, and making sure we had what we needed."
Like so many hardworking parents, Maria wasn't looking for a handout. She was doing everything she could to provide a stable life for her son. She simply needed support to bridge the gap between what Joshua needed and what she could afford.
That's when she learned about The Giving Society.
After reaching out for assistance, Joshua was approved through the Brilliance Scholars Fund to receive not one, but two semesters of reading and math tutoring.
For the first time, Joshua had consistent academic support tailored to his needs.
Slowly, things began to change.
The frustration that once accompanied homework started to disappear. His reading improved. His math scores increased. His teachers noticed he was participating more in class and raising his hand with confidence.
Most importantly, Joshua began believing in himself again.
Today, Joshua is excelling in school and approaching challenges with a confidence that wasn't there before.
For Maria, the impact went far beyond improved grades.
"I thought I was applying for help with tutoring," she says. "But we received so much more. Watching Joshua gain confidence in himself has been incredible. I truly feel that this confidence boost changed the trajectory of my son's life."
At The Giving Society, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their family's financial circumstances.
Because when barriers are removed, children don't just improve academically.
They discover what's possible.
And sometimes, one opportunity can change everything.
